Following the action at Jackson and LaSalle, we will go directly into the communities hit hardest by the foreclosure crisis and reclaim a boarded up home to give it to a family in need.

Defend our right to dissent: Jan 17 Chicago City Council Hearings
Location: Chicago City Hall, LaSalle & Washington
Chicago City Council committees are meeting to consider proposed ordinance changes that will crush basic constitutional freedoms, from free speech to the right to assemble and protest. While the immediate target is NATO/G8 organizing, the changes will be permanent — and gut public expression that ranges from union pickets to Occupy Chicago protests. Send a message to aldermen that Chicagoans oppose Mayor Emanuel’s assault on basic freedoms. Attend the City Council hearings on 1/17, and spread the word!

Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) is calling on SDS members, students, and youth to travel to Washington D.C. on July 28-31st to participate in the conference and march to Save Our Schools organized and endorsed by a diverse & growing group of organizations (www.saveourschoolsmarch.org).

Why We Are Marching
Students for a Democratic Society has been fighting back against cuts to education for years, leading struggles on campuses across the country. We believe education is a right, not a privilege. We believe that students should not have to suffer fee and tuition hikes so that top administrators can maintain their six-figure salaries. We believe faculty and campus workers should not be subject to mandatory furloughs to maintain wasteful and unbalanced budgets. We believe that ethnic, women’s and LGBTQ programs are NOT expendable. We say, “chop from the top!”, that cuts should be made to top administrators with bloated salaries. We want student, worker, and faculty control over the university; the Board of Regents should not be in control of our futures and lives. We will not stand by and do nothing while the quality of and access to education is diminished, while our schools are privatized, and while K-12 public schools face similar attacks.

SDS Presence at the Conference and March
SDS will be leading TWO workshops at the conference in the morning of Friday, July 29th : 1.) “The Attacks on Anti War Activists and New McCarthyism”
10:30am-11:30am and Workshop 2: “Unification of Students, Workers, and National Movements” 11:30am-12:30pm. Please join us for these workshops at the American University in Washington, D.C. – rooms TBD. We will also have an SDS speaker at the march on Saturday, speaking on behalf and to the position of national SDS.

Reports claim over 100 civilians have died due to U.S./NATO airstrikes

Students for a Democratic Society is strongly opposed to U.S. and U.N. Intervention in Libya. The absurdly named “Operation Odyssey Dawn” is nothing short of an open act of war against a sovereign state by former colonialist power with the aims of creating a stronghold over the trade of oil. This attack should also be clearly seen as a ruthless attempt to stop the revolutions and uprisings happening within the Arab world.

At the beginning of “Operation Odyssey Dawn,” coalition forces fired about $62 Million worth of Tomahawk missiles at Libya. In a time where Detroit public schools are merging with the result that class sizes will approach 60 students, we in SDS wonder if that $62 Million could have been better spent.

Libyans’ right to self-determination must be be upheld. Whether rebel forces or government forces will ultimately prevail is up to the Libyan people. While opinions vary on Libya and the role/power of the Qaddafi government, conscious people of the world must stand with civilians of Libya and say no to external military intervention of Libya. War and occupation is ongoing and has ravaged the livelihoods of the people of Iraq and Afghanistan. A new battle in Libya not only means more lives lost at the aims of procuring oil, but it also means social services here at home will be slashed. Our government should turn its focus into taking care of its own people rather than killing people in other countries.

Naturally we in SDS have varying opinions as to the merits of the rebels and the government they are attempting to overthrow. That said, we are absolutely united in opposing external military intervention.

We condemn any “military aid” to foreign countries. We demand money for human needs here at home!

Libyans have the right to resist foreign military attack!
Only the people of Libya can decide who will be in their government!
